A Support Group for Parents & Guardians of Transgender Youth
This group is held @ Kaiser Permanente Behavioral Health Department, Thousand Oaks, CA.
Parents and guardians of transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive youth can benefit from support in understanding and caring for their loved ones. We invite and welcome parents of trans teens anywhere in their transition, whether questioning, transitioning, or transitioned. This group is a courageous place to get information, ask questions, grieve losses, embrace new understandings, and build skills for stronger, more supportive families. Topic may include:
Understanding Gender Dyphoria: What it is and what it isn’t, why it’s so difficult for cisgender folk to understand,
How to tell the difference between your needs and theirs, attending to your needs and concerns: What or your process do you share with your trans youth? When do you share any of your process with your trans youth?
Names and pronouns: Why they are important, how to relate these requests?
Medical interventions: What are they, why might someone want them, how and when to consider these requests?
Coming out or inviting in: What is it, when, how, and to whom? How much do you say, how little? Who does it (you, your trans youth, etc.)? How to you invite family members in? How do you invite your friends, coworkers, faith community, etc.?
